Purpose-built 2U rack server

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that need dense compute and storage in a standard cabinet. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor running at 1.9 GHz and 96 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 24 DIMM slots. Dual 500 W redundant hot-swap power supplies keep the platform running through a module failure. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics controller provides basic management video.

Upgrade path from smaller towers

This configuration replaces tower servers or 1U units that have exhausted drive bays, memory slots or power redundancy. The 16 SFF SAS bays and Smart Array P440 controller with 4 GB flash-backed write cache add RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 support for the two included 600 GB 15 K drives. A second processor can be added later to reach 36 total cores and the full 3 TB memory ceiling, so the jump is worthwhile when growth is planned in the same rack space.

Build integration needs

The chassis occupies 2U and requires a rack with front-to-rear airflow and enough depth for cable management behind the hot-swap bays. DDR4 ECC registered modules up to 64 GB each fill the remaining slots, and the C610 chipset links the second CPU over QPI when installed. The P440 handles 12 Gb and 6 Gb SAS traffic, freeing the system board for additional HBAs or NICs in the available PCIe slots. No operating system is included.
