This new Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.30 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules and a PERC H730P RAID controller with battery backup. Two 800 GB SATA SSDs are installed in the eight 2.5-inch drive bays.

Suited for multi-threaded workloads

The dual 12-core CPUs and 24 memory slots supporting up to 3 TB make this platform appropriate for virtualization, database and compute tasks that scale across many threads. Buyers who need single-thread speeds above the 3.2 GHz turbo or more than two processor sockets should evaluate other platforms.

Storage controller and drive interface

The PERC H730P provides 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA connectivity with RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. The installed 800 GB drives use the SATA interface, so any storage expansion must use SAS or SATA media.
