The Dell PowerEdge R740 arrives as a complete 2U rack system with dual Intel Gold 6132 processors, each running at 2.6 GHz with 14 cores. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 memory are installed as two 16 GB modules at 2666 MT/s. Two 7.68 TB SAS SSDs provide high-capacity flash storage managed by an H730P RAID controller. Integrated iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote management from day one.

Eight-bay chassis with PCIe Gen 3 expansion

The 2.5-inch drive bay cage holds up to eight drives, leaving six bays free for additional SAS SSDs or HDDs. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for network adapters, GPU accelerators or storage controllers. Dual 1100 W redundant power supplies are included, so the platform can support power-hungry add-in cards without a separate PSU purchase. Builders who need more than eight drive bays or PCIe Gen 4 bandwidth will need a different chassis.

Twenty-eight cores at 2.6 GHz deliver consistent performance for virtualisation hosts, database nodes or rendering farms that run at high utilisation for hours. The H730P controller offloads parity calculations, keeping CPU cycles free for application workloads while protecting the 7.68 TB SSDs with RAID levels up to 6. Workloads that require single-thread burst frequency above 2.6 GHz or GPU compute density beyond the available PCIe slots will not reach their target on this platform.
