Dense 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 packs twenty-six 3.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rackmount chassis. Dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver forty-eight cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. Two hundred fifty-six gigabytes of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory fill eight of sixteen slots. The PERC H330 controller manages the installed drives.

SATA throughput ceiling

Each 4 TB drive spins at 7.2 K RPM and connects through a 6 Gb/s SATA interface. The H330 controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA bandwidth to the backplane, so aggregate throughput is limited by the SATA link speed of the individual drives. The board offers sixteen DDR4 slots with a 1 TB maximum capacity, leaving eight slots open for future expansion.

Redundant power and remote management

Two 1100 W platinum-efficiency power supplies provide hot-swap redundancy. Integrated iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full out-of-band monitoring and control. Networking includes a dual-port 1 GbE LOM and a Broadcom 57414 dual-port 10/25 Gb SFP28 OCP 2.0 mezzanine card. Front bezel and ready rails are not included.
