The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC530 is a 14TB helium-sealed hard drive built for enterprise storage arrays. It uses a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface, a 512MB cache and CMR recording technology in a standard 3.5-inch form factor. The HelioSeal design delivers up to 58% lower idle watts per terabyte compared with earlier air-filled models. A 2.5 million hour MTBF rating supports continuous operation in data centre environments.

This drive targets cloud and hyperscale storage, massive scale-out data centres, distributed file systems and object storage platforms such as Ceph or OpenStack Swift. It also fits surveillance analytics and big data workloads running on Apache Hadoop. The SATA interface and mechanical latency make it unsuitable for applications that demand the response times of solid-state media or workloads requiring a faster host bus than 6.0Gb/s.
SATA 6.0Gb/s interface governs host compatibility
The drive connects through a standard SATA 6.0Gb/s port and includes a SATA-to-SATA power adapter cable for legacy backplanes. A power-disable feature allows host-controlled power cycling. Systems without a free SATA data and power connection cannot use this drive without an additional controller.
