AV-optimised storage for DVR builds

This 250GB Western Digital AV drive targets integrators building digital video recorders or surveillance appliances that demand continuous sequential writes. Its SilkStream technology is tuned for smooth playback of up to twelve simultaneous HD streams using a 2 MB host transfer block. It is not suited for general-purpose OS boots or random-access workloads that need low latency.

SATA 3Gb/s interface and 8MB cache

The single specification that determines compatibility is the 3Gb/s SATA interface paired with an 8MB buffer. Systems limited to SATA 1.5Gb/s will operate at the lower speed, while 6Gb/s controllers will negotiate down; no other interface or protocol is supported. Builders must verify their host controller provides a standard 3.5" SATA data and power connection.

Thermals, noise and power in normal use

As a 7200 RPM mechanical drive it produces audible seek noise and measurable vibration during sustained recording, typical for always-on AV workloads. Power draw follows standard 3.5" SATA patterns with higher spin-up current and lower idle consumption. Adequate chassis airflow is recommended to keep operating temperatures within the manufacturer's specified range.
