The PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack-mounted server system built for storage-intensive workloads. It fits software-defined storage deployments, service-provider environments and virtual desktop infrastructure. Dual Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors provide 32 cores total at 2.6 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. The platform supports up to two processors on the Intel C620 chipset.

Tool-less rails and hot-swap drive bays

Installation uses the included Ready Rails for tool-less mounting in a standard rack. Twelve 3.5-inch hot-swap bays allow drive changes without shutting down the system. Redundant 750-watt platinum power supplies are also hot-swappable. The PERC H730P controller battery must be seated correctly or the write-back cache will stay disabled, a common oversight during first boot.

512 GB DDR4 registered ECC across 24 slots

The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory installed in 16 of 24 DIMM slots. Maximum supported capacity is 3 TB when all slots are populated with compatible modules. Buyers who need more memory than 3 TB or who require non-ECC or consumer DDR4 cannot use this platform.
