It targets administrators upgrading Supermicro X9DAE, X9DAi, X9DBS, X9SRA or X9SRE platforms that require registered error-correcting memory. The modules run at 1.5 V with CL11 latency and a 2Rx4 organisation. Standard desktop boards cannot use this memory and it must not be mixed with unbuffered DIMMs.

Registered buffering reduces electrical load on the memory controller, allowing all four slots to stay populated without signal degradation during long compute runs. ECC circuitry detects and corrects single-bit errors on the fly, preventing silent data corruption in workloads such as virtualisation, ZFS storage or database serving. Each 240-pin DIMM installs like any standard module, but the key notch position is specific to DDR3 registered parts. Builders often mistakenly try to pair these with unbuffered DIMMs or install them in consumer motherboards that lack registered-memory support, both of which result in a no-post condition. Verify the Supermicro model list before purchase and populate slots per the board manual to enable quad-channel operation.
