Dual 20-core Xeon blade server

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server fitted with two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo. Twenty cores per socket give 40 threads for virtualization, private cloud or high-performance computing workloads. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory and two 960 GB SATA SSDs on a PERC S140 controller. The blade includes a Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb network daughter card and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management.

Chassis slot and memory headroom

Verify you have a free half-height slot in a compatible PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis before ordering. The server supports up to 1.5 TB of DDR4 across 16 DIMM slots, so plan additional memory modules if your workloads need more than the installed 16 GB. Storage bays accept 2.5-inch SATA or SAS drives; the PERC S140 handles RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10. No operating system is included, so prepare installation media separately.

Density and management fit

The half-height form factor leaves the adjacent slot open for a second blade, doubling compute density in the same chassis enclosure. Dual 10 Gb ports connect directly to the chassis fabric, freeing PCIe slots for other daughter cards. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides out-of-band monitoring, firmware updates and virtual console access without consuming host resources. Front bezel and ready rails are not supplied, so factor those into rack integration if required.
