The PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server that fits two Xeon Gold 6134 processors and 24 drive bays into a single chassis. It targets software-defined storage clusters, service-provider platforms and virtual desktop infrastructure where capacity and compute must share the same footprint.

SATA throughput ceiling

Twenty-four 800GB SSDs connect through a PERC H730P controller limited to the SATA 6Gb/s interface. The 12Gb/s SAS backplane cannot accelerate SATA media, so sustained sequential throughput tops out at the SATA link rate rather than the controller’s native speed.

Twenty-four bay maximum

The chassis accepts exactly 24 2.5-inch drives and cannot be expanded further. Buyers who need more raw capacity must add another node instead of populating additional slots in this unit.
