The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for dense compute workloads such as virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors running at 3.0 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo across 18 cores each. Installed memory is 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC across four modules. Storage uses a PERC S140 controller with two 960 GB SATA SSDs in a 2.5-inch bay.

Suits dense racks; not for standalone towers

This blade fits Dell PowerEdge MX and M1000e chassis, so it suits operators who already run those enclosures and need up to 56 cores per node with room to grow to 1.5 TB of memory. Buyers who need a tower or rack-mount server that operates outside a blade chassis should look elsewhere. The integrated Matrox G200 graphics with 8 MB video memory is for management only and cannot drive graphical workloads. No operating system is included.

Slides into chassis; check enclosure compatibility

Installation means sliding the blade into a compatible MX or M1000e slot and cabling the 10 Gb dual-port Broadcom 57810S-K daughter card. iDRAC9 Enterprise gives full remote control once the chassis management module is configured. Common issues are mismatched chassis firmware, missing mezzanine cards for extra I/O, and forgetting that front bezel and ready rails are not supplied. Memory population rules for 16 slots must be followed to reach maximum capacity.
