This PCIe-to-M.2 board connects to the Raspberry Pi 5 through a 16-pin cable and accepts NVMe protocol solid-state drives in 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 form factors. It supports Gen2 and Gen3 signalling and allows the Pi 5 to boot directly from the attached drive. A transparent acrylic mounting plate is included for a side-mounted, space-saving layout.
The adapter replaces the standard microSD card with a faster NVMe drive, cutting boot times and improving application responsiveness for workloads that demand higher sustained throughput. The jump is worth it when your project needs quicker random access or larger capacity than a microSD card can practically provide. Builders who need a second drive or a different protocol will not be served by this single-slot design.
Connect the 16-pin cable to the Pi 5 PCIe header, seat the M.2 drive and secure it with the supplied acrylic plate. Power can be drawn through the PCIe cable or an optional 3-pin cable, so choose the method that matches your power budget. The most common issue is neglecting to enable the PCIe interface in the Pi 5 boot configuration before expecting the drive to appear.

The side-mounting acrylic plate attaches to the Pi 5 and holds the adapter beside the board, so you need clearance on one side for the plate and the connected M.2 drive rather than vertical space above the Pi.
After connecting the 16-pin cable and seating the M.2 drive, you must enable the PCIe interface in the Pi 5 boot configuration and set the boot order to the NVMe device; skipping either step leaves the Pi booting from the SD card.
Use the 3-pin cable when your M.2 drive draws more current than the 16-pin connection can supply, which can happen with larger 2280 drives or drives rated for higher power envelopes.
