The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server built for dense storage workloads. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 ten-core processor running at 2.3 GHz and 8 GB of DDR4 memory. The chassis supports up to 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch drives and includes a DVD-ROM drive. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies keep the system running during a module failure.

Upgrade from limited drive bays or older RAID

This system replaces servers that max out at eight or twelve drive bays or rely on a 6 Gbps controller. The jump is worth it when you need twenty-four 2.5-inch bays backed by a 12 Gbps PERC H330 controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. The installed 8 GB is the maximum listed in the supplied configuration; heavier virtualisation or database loads will require additional DDR4 modules up to the platform limit of 1 536 GB across twenty-four slots.

Fits a 2U rack with room for expansion

The server occupies a standard 2U rack space and provides up to six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID card slot for extra networking or acceleration cards. Four onboard 1 GbE ports handle basic connectivity, while an optional NDC can add 10 GbE links. iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller gives remote firmware updates and console access without a local keyboard or monitor. No operating system is included, so you supply the hypervisor or OS that matches your workload.
