Dual-socket 2U server for scale-out workloads

The PowerEdge R740 fits two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 12 cores. A total of 512 GB DDR4 registered ECC memory occupies 16 of the 24 available slots. The platform targets virtualisation clusters, database nodes and compute-heavy applications that benefit from 24 threads per socket.

Storage ceiling set by eight 2.5-inch bays

Eight front-access trays accept SAS or SATA drives but no drives are included. The PERC H730P RAID controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with a 2 GB cache backed by a battery. Maximum raw capacity is therefore limited by the number of bays and the largest 2.5-inch drives you source separately. Network I/O relies on a quad-port daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections.

Redundant platinum power supplies

Dual 750 W platinum-efficiency PSUs share the load and allow hot-swap replacement without downtime. Ready Rails mount the 2U chassis in standard four-post racks without tools, and the front bezel snaps on for a clean finish. iDRAC 9 Enterprise gives full remote console, power control and hardware inventory over a dedicated management port. The system ships new without installed SSDs or operating system.
