Mission-Critical 4-Socket Server

The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built for mission-critical workloads. It ships with four Intel Xeon Gold 5120 processors, each running at 2.2 GHz with 14 cores. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730P controller provide high-capacity internal storage.

SAS Controller And Drive Limits

The PERC H730P controller manages the eight installed SAS drives with 2 GB cache and battery backup. It supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 plus pass-through mode. The 12 Gb/s SAS interface sets the maximum throughput for the installed 2.5-inch drives. The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch bays, so total internal drive count cannot exceed eight without external enclosures.

Rail Installation And Cable Routing

Ready Rails are included for standard 4-post rack mounting. The 3U height and 1600 W redundant power supplies require careful cable planning at the rear. Memory upgrades use 48 DDR4 slots; population rules for quad-socket configurations must be followed to avoid boot failures. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise module needs a dedicated network connection for remote management access.
