The Supermicro SYS-8048B-TRFT is a 4U rackmount server built around four Intel Xeon E7-4820 v2 processors, each running at 2.0 GHz with eight cores. It arrives with 3 TB of DDR3 1600 MHz registered ECC memory installed across 96 DIMM slots. Twenty-four front-accessible 3.5-inch hot-swap bays accept SATA or SAS drives for high-capacity storage. A MegaRAID 9361-8i controller provides hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with 1 GB cache and battery backup.

Upgrade from Dual-Socket Platforms

Moving from a dual-socket server to this quad-socket chassis adds two more CPUs and doubles the memory channel count, which helps workloads that scale across many threads such as large databases or virtualisation hosts. The jump is worth it when your current system hits a hard ceiling on core count or memory capacity and the application can use the extra parallelism. Buyers who need a single-socket density or lower power draw will not find that here.

Installation Notes

The unit weighs enough to require a mechanical lift or at least two people for rack mounting; rails and front bezel are not included. All four 1620 W platinum power supplies are hot-swap redundant, so cabling to diverse PDU circuits is straightforward. Memory population follows a strict per-socket channel order — mis-seating a single DIMM will halt POST with no video output beyond the Matrox G200. Drive trays use a tool-less latch; ensure the SAS/SATA backplane cables are fully seated before powering on.
