The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rackmount server designed for business workloads such as virtualization, databases, file storage, backups and application hosting. It ships new with dual Intel Xeon Gold 5122 processors running at 3.60GHz, providing 8 cores and 16 threads total. The system includes 256GB of DDR4 ECC Registered memory and a PERC H740P RAID controller.

Upgrade path from smaller configurations

This configuration replaces single-socket or lower-core-count servers when workloads demand more simultaneous threads and larger memory capacity. The jump is worth it when current hardware cannot keep virtual machines responsive or when database query latency becomes a bottleneck. It also supersedes setups limited to fewer drive bays or slower storage controllers.

Capacity and headroom for growth

The 256GB DDR4 memory supports multiple services and data-heavy applications with room to expand toward the 3TB maximum. Eight 1.2TB 10K RPM SAS drives deliver high-speed storage access for operating systems, virtual machines and backups. Dual 10GbE and dual 1GbE ports handle network traffic for hybrid storage and virtualized environments. The 8-bay chassis is fully populated, so further storage expansion requires external enclosures.
