Dell PowerEdge R730 8-Bay Server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rackmount server built for virtualisation, database and storage workloads. It ships with one Intel Xeon E5-2680v4 processor running at 2.4 GHz with 14 cores and 35 MB cache. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 12 DIMM slots, expandable to 768 GB. A PERC H730 SAS RAID controller manages the eight 3.5-inch drive bays that accept SATA drives.

Single CPU with room for a second

One processor is installed in a dual-socket motherboard, leaving the second socket free for a matching Xeon when compute demand grows. The 495 W redundant power supplies support the additional CPU and a full complement of drives without requiring a chassis change. Four onboard network ports — two 10 GbE and two 1 GbE — provide ample connectivity for storage and management traffic. iDRAC8 Enterprise enables remote power control, console redirection and firmware updates from anywhere.

Sustained throughput for mixed workloads

The 14-core Xeon maintains its 2.4 GHz base clock under continuous multi-threaded load, avoiding the frequency drops seen in short-burst benchmarks. DDR4 ECC memory corrects single-bit errors on the fly, preventing data corruption during long-running jobs. The H730 controller caches writes in its onboard buffer, smoothing latency spikes when multiple virtual machines hit the array simultaneously. Eight 3.5-inch bays let capacity scale linearly with workload growth.
