The Dell PowerEdge R740 arrives with dual Intel Gold 6132 processors, each delivering 14 cores at 2.6GHz, and 256GB of DDR4 memory already installed. Two 7.68TB SAS SSDs sit behind an H730P RAID controller, giving immediate storage capacity for databases or virtualisation clusters. The 1100W redundant power supply and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management are fitted as standard.

Eight drive bays and PCIe Gen 3 expansion

The 2U chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays, so six additional bays remain free for future capacity growth. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for network cards, GPU accelerators or additional storage controllers. Integrated Intel X550 networking supplies two 10Gb RJ45 and two 1Gb RJ45 ports without consuming a slot. No optical drive is fitted, leaving the front panel clear for drive access.

Sustained multi-threaded throughput

Dual 14-core CPUs and 16 memory modules populate all channels, keeping memory bandwidth high during long compute runs. The H730P controller offloads parity calculations, maintaining consistent write latency on the SAS SSDs under heavy I/O. Redundant power and enterprise-grade cooling allow continuous operation without thermal throttling. Builders needing more than eight drive bays or newer PCIe generations will need a different platform.
