Four-socket Xeon Gold 5120 server

The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server populated with four Intel Xeon Gold 5120 processors. Each CPU runs at 2.2 GHz with 14 cores and a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across 48 slots. It targets organisations running mission-critical workloads that demand high core counts and large memory capacity in a compact rack footprint.

PERC H730P storage controller upgrade

The integrated Dell PERC H730P controller provides 2 GB cache and 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity with battery-backed write cache. It supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. This replaces simpler onboard SATA controllers when data protection, cache acceleration and mixed drive support are required. The jump is worth it for databases, virtualisation hosts and any workload sensitive to write latency or drive failure recovery.

3U rack height and eight 2.5-inch bays

The chassis occupies 3U of rack space and provides eight front-accessible 2.5-inch drive trays for SAS or SATA devices. No drives are installed, so capacity must be added separately. The form factor limits internal storage density compared to larger enclosures, and the fixed eight-bay backplane cannot be expanded without external enclosures. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports.
