The Dell PowerEdge R640 10B is a 1U rackmount server built for business workloads such as virtualization, databases, file storage and application hosting. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors deliver 40 cores at 2.40GHz for multi-threaded performance. It ships with 256GB of DDR4 memory and includes an H730P storage controller. This configuration targets organisations that need dense compute in a single rack unit.

Capacity and headroom

Ten 2.5-inch drive bays hold 600GB 10K SAS drives each, providing raw capacity for operating systems, virtual machines, backups and business data. Installed memory sits at 256GB with a platform maximum of 3TB, leaving headroom for larger datasets or more concurrent virtual machines. Processor sockets are fully populated at two, so CPU expansion is not possible beyond the current 40 cores. The integrated GPU handles basic display output only and does not accelerate compute workloads.

Thermals, noise and power

As a 1U rackmount system weighing 60 units, the chassis relies on high-speed internal fans to cool dual processors and ten spinning drives under load. Acoustic output is typical for dense rack servers and is not suited to quiet office environments. Power draw scales with CPU utilisation and drive activity; the integrated GPU adds minimal load. Front-panel LEDs indicate power, Ethernet and USB status for quick visual checks.
