Dell PowerEdge R640 virtualization server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rackmount server built for business workloads such as virtualization, databases and application hosting. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors running at 3.0 GHz, providing 36 cores in total. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 memory and an H730P storage controller to simplify array management. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 600 GB 10K SAS hard drives.

Sustained multi-core performance

The dual 18-core Xeon Gold 6154 CPUs maintain a 3.0 GHz base frequency across all cores, giving consistent throughput for long-running virtual machines and database queries. With 256 GB of DDR4 installed and a maximum capacity of 3 TB, memory pressure stays low even when many services run simultaneously. The H730P controller manages the eight 600 GB SAS drives without a bottleneck during continuous read and write cycles.

SAS 6 Gb/s storage interface limit

The eight 600 GB drives connect through a 6 Gb/s SAS interface, which caps sustained sequential throughput at the link speed rather than the drive media rate. Random I/O performance is bound by the 10K spindle speed and the controller queue depth. Expanding capacity beyond the eight populated bays would require a chassis change, as the R640 8-bay front panel does not accept additional drives.
