Dual-socket Xeon server for virtualisation

The PowerEdge R730 fits two Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors, each with 8 cores at 2.6 GHz and a 3.4 GHz turbo frequency. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4-2133 registered ECC memory fill four of twenty-four slots. Eight 400 GB SATA SSDs connect through a PERC H730 controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Sustained throughput with redundant power

Two 750 W platinum power supplies share the load, so a single failure does not interrupt operation. The 2U chassis uses hot-swap fans that maintain airflow across both CPUs and the storage backplane during continuous database or VDI workloads. The H730 battery-backed cache preserves write performance during extended write-heavy periods.

Replaces single-socket or HDD-based rack servers

Organisations moving from a single-processor platform gain a second socket and double the core count without changing rack height. Sites still running mechanical drives see lower latency and higher IOPS from the eight enterprise SSDs. Buyers who need more than 1.5 TB of RAM or more than two processors will require a larger platform.
