The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rackmount server built for midsize and large enterprises running data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, virtual desktop infrastructure, databases and high-performance computing data nodes. It ships new with dual processors, memory, storage controller, drives, networking and remote management installed.

Dual Xeon E5-2640 v3 upgrade

Two Intel Xeon E5-2640 v3 8-core processors run at 2.6 GHz with a 3.4 GHz turbo frequency, delivering 16 cores and 32 threads in a single 2U chassis. The jump is worth it when workloads need more parallel threads than a single-socket system can provide and the LGA 2011-3 platform’s 24 DIMM slots allow memory to scale with the compute.

12Gb/s SAS storage and quad-port networking

The PERC H730 1 GB controller drives eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives at 12 Gb/s with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. A quad-port Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links, while iDRAC 8 Enterprise gives dedicated remote management. Dual 750 W platinum hot-swap supplies, rails and bezel complete the package.
