The Dell PowerEdge R730xd packs twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rack chassis, making it a fit for storage-heavy roles such as software-defined storage nodes, backup targets or video surveillance archives. Dual Xeon E5-2620 v3 processors at 2.4 GHz and 192 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory provide the compute and memory bandwidth to keep many concurrent I/O streams moving. The PERC H730 RAID controller handles SAS drives with hardware RAID, and iDRAC8 Enterprise gives full out-of-band management.

Suited for capacity-first deployments.

This configuration targets buyers who need maximum drive count per rack unit and integrated remote management. It is not suited for workloads that require GPU acceleration, single-thread performance above the installed 2.4 GHz, or memory capacities beyond the 768 GB ceiling. The system ships without drives, so teams planning all-flash arrays or specific SAS SSD models must source those separately. Network connectivity includes two 10 GbE and two 1 GbE ports from Intel I350 and X540 controllers.

The single specification that determines whether this chassis fits the project is the twenty-four 2.5-inch SAS drive bays. If the design calls for more than twenty-four devices, or for 3.5-inch form factors, a different platform is required.
