Dual 20-core Xeon platform

The PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors running at 2.4 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo. Each CPU delivers 20 cores, giving 40 threads total for heavy virtualization or database workloads. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. The Intel C620 chipset supports up to 3 TB across 24 DIMM slots for future expansion.

Hot-swap bays and redundant power

Eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drive trays are accessible from the front and support hot-swap replacement without downtime. The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache provides RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Networking uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Enterprise give remote management and power redundancy. Rails and a front bezel are included for rack mounting.

Maximum two-socket scaling

The board is limited to two processors and both sockets are already populated with the maximum 20-core Gold 6148 CPUs. No further CPU upgrade is possible within this chassis. Buyers who need more than 40 cores or a newer microarchitecture must choose a different platform. The 24 memory slots allow growth to 3 TB of DDR4, but the processor ceiling is fixed at the installed pair.
