Dense storage server for virtualised workloads

The PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for software-defined storage and virtual desktop infrastructure. Two Xeon Silver 4116 processors provide 24 cores running at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 ECC memory across 16 modules supports large memory footprints. Twenty-four 400 GB SATA SSDs sit behind a PERC H730P controller with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through.

Sustained throughput from flash and dual CPUs

The all-flash array keeps latency low while the H730P battery-backed cache absorbs write bursts during heavy database or VDI sessions. Dual Xeon sockets maintain compute headroom when multiple VMs contend for CPU cycles. Quad-port networking with two 10 Gb SFP+ and two 1 GbE links prevents the network from becoming the bottleneck under continuous load. Redundant 1100 W platinum supplies keep both CPUs and all drives powered if one unit fails.

Serviceable 2U chassis with front-access drives

Twenty-four 2.5-inch bays face the cold aisle so drives can be swapped without pulling the server from the rack. Included ready rails and bezel simplify installation in standard cabinets. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides remote power control, console redirection and firmware updates over a dedicated management port. The LGA 3647 socket and C620 chipset limit upgrades to the current two-socket maximum.
