Balanced 1U rack server

The HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 fits in a single rack unit and ships with two Xeon E5-2603 v3 processors, each running at 1.6 GHz with six cores. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory occupy two of the sixteen available DIMM slots. Two 500 GB 7.2K SATA drives connect to the onboard B140i controller, which supports RAID 0, 1 and 5. A 550 W redundant hot-swap power supply is included.

Upgrade from single-socket or smaller chassis

This system replaces a single-processor tower or a half-depth rack box when the workload needs dual-socket memory bandwidth and up to thirty-six total cores with E5-2600 v3 or v4 CPUs. The jump is worth it when applications scale across two sockets and the eight 2.5-inch drive bays provide room for future SAS or SATA expansion. Buyers who need more than eight drive bays or a dedicated hardware RAID card with cache will need a different platform.

Steady throughput under sustained load

Redundant hot-swap power and the 1U airflow design keep both processors at their base frequency during long batch runs or virtualisation workloads. The B140i software RAID handles parity calculations on the host CPUs, so sustained write-heavy RAID 5 jobs consume processor cycles that could otherwise serve applications. Memory speed runs at up to 2400 MT/s depending on the installed processors, giving predictable bandwidth for in-memory databases.
