The iStarUSA S-35-DE4BK is a compact tower built around a Mini-ITX motherboard and four trayless 3.5-inch hot-swap bays. It targets builders who want a small-footprint file server or NAS that lets them insert or remove drives without tools. A single 120mm fan and a 4mm aluminium front panel provide airflow across the drive stack. The black finish and integrated carry handles suit a desk or shelf deployment.

Upgrade from fixed-cage or external enclosures

This chassis replaces stationary drive cages or USB-attached boxes that require a reboot or cable juggling to swap storage. The jump is worth it when you need true hot-swap SATA or SAS support at 6.0Gb/s and want the drives inside a rigid aluminium-and-steel frame rather than a loose dock. It also adds a single internal 2.5-inch mount and one full-height expansion slot for a RAID HBA or NIC.

Four 3.5-inch drives plus one 2.5-inch SSD

The four front bays accept 3.5-inch SATA or SAS hard drives and saturate a 6.0Gb/s link per bay. The lone 2.5-inch internal position holds an OS SSD or cache drive. Headroom ends at four large drives; there is no room for additional 3.5-inch units, no second expansion slot, and the front I/O is limited to two USB 2.0 ports.
