PoE+ power and NVMe for Pi 5

This expansion board adds 802.3 at Power over Ethernet and an M.2 M-Key NVMe slot to a Raspberry Pi 5. It delivers 5V 4.5A to the Pi through the Ethernet cable, removing the need for a separate USB-C power adapter. The board targets builders who want a single-cable deployment for always-on projects such as Home Assistant, light servers or small Pi clusters. A compatible PoE+ switch or injector is required to power the system.

Single-cable build integration

The HAT draws power and data from one Ethernet connection, freeing desk space and cabinet ports from extra power bricks and storage cables. It mounts directly on the Pi 5 GPIO header and exposes an M.2 M-Key slot for NVMe drives, so the microSD card can be replaced entirely. Builders who need SATA or AHCI M.2 drives cannot use this board, and no SSD is included in the package.

Four NVMe form factors supported

The slot accepts 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 NVMe SSDs, giving flexibility to choose capacity and physical length that suit the enclosure. Boot times, database access and long-term reliability improve over microSD storage for typical IoT and NAS workloads. The 5V 4.5A PoE power path is sized for the Pi 5 plus a single NVMe drive; adding high-power peripherals or a second storage device would exceed the available headroom.

Domande su questo articolo

How much current can the PoE+ supply deliver to the Raspberry Pi 5 under sustained load?

The board outputs 5V at 4.5A through the PoE power path, which is the sustained current limit for the Pi 5 and attached NVMe SSD.

Does the HAT generate noticeable heat or fan noise when running 24/7 from a PoE+ switch?

The expansion board has no active cooling; heat dissipation relies on the Pi 5’s own thermal solution and the airflow in your enclosure.

Which PoE standard must my switch or injector support for this board to work?

The board requires an 802.3 at (PoE+) source; standard 802.3 af PoE will not provide enough power for the 5V 4.5A output.
