Compact M.2 SATA enclosure

The Vantec NST-203C3-SV is a bus-powered enclosure that turns a B-key or B+M-key M.2 SATA SSD into a portable USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C drive. It accepts 2240, 2260 and 2280 modules up to 2 TB and works with Windows 10, Mac OS X 10.10 or higher and Chrome OS. The anodised aluminium unibody doubles as a heatsink and fits in a pocket.

Build integration

No AC adapter is required; the enclosure draws power directly from the host USB-C port. A USB-C to USB-C cable and a screwdriver with screws are included for tool-assisted installation. The single bay supports one SATA M.2 drive and a hardware write-protect switch toggles read-only mode without software. UASP and plug-and-play operation mean no drivers are needed.

Sustained operation

The aluminium body conducts heat away from the SSD during long transfers, helping maintain consistent throughput. A bicolour LED shows red when the write-protect switch is active and white during normal read-write activity. Because the enclosure is limited to the SATA protocol, peak speeds are bounded by the drive’s own SATA performance rather than the USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface.
