The PowerEdge R640 packs two Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each with 16 cores at 2.6 GHz, into a single rack unit. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight slots. The PERC H730P controller manages eight 300 GB SAS drives. Quad-port networking adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links. iDRAC 9 Enterprise handles remote management. Dual 750 W platinum supplies provide redundant power.

Installation notes

The server arrives with rails and a front bezel fitted, so rack mounting is straightforward. Hot-swap drive bays and redundant power supplies allow component changes without downtime. The 24 DIMM slots are partially populated, leaving room for memory expansion up to 3 TB. Cable routing in a 1U chassis is tight; plan cable runs before sliding the unit into place. The PERC H730P battery-backed cache must be seated correctly for RAID protection to activate.

Sustained load behaviour

Dual 16-core CPUs maintain 2.6 GHz base frequency under continuous multi-threaded workloads, with turbo up to 3.7 GHz when thermal headroom allows. Platinum-efficiency power supplies deliver stable output during prolonged peaks. The H730P controller sustains RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 throughput across the eight 10 K SAS spindles. iDRAC 9 Enterprise monitors thermals and power in real time, enabling proactive throttling before overheating occurs. Redundant fans keep airflow steady even if one module fails.
