The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with eight cores. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. The PERC H730P controller manages eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides remote management. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and rails are included.

SAS 12 Gb/s controller limits

The PERC H730P operates at 12 Gb/s over SAS and SATA links, supporting RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 2.4 TB 10K SAS disks. The controller’s 2 GB cache is battery-backed. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. The chassis fits a standard 1U rack space.

Tool-less rails and cabling care

Ready Rails allow tool-less installation in compatible square-hole or round-hole racks. The bezel snaps on the front without screws. Memory slots total 24, so the current 128 GB leaves room for expansion up to 3 TB. Installers must route SFP+ cables carefully to avoid blocking airflow in the 1U height. Hot-swap power supplies and drives can be replaced while the system runs.
