2U rack server for compute-intensive workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R740 arrives as a 2U rack-mount system populated with two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors running at 2.1 GHz. Twelve cores per socket deliver 24 threads for virtualisation, database or high-performance computing tasks. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory are installed, with headroom to scale toward the platform maximum of 3 TB. Integrated graphics handle basic console output without a discrete GPU.

Eight 3.5-inch bays and PERC H730P storage

The chassis provides eight large-form-factor drive bays ready for SATA hard drives or SSDs; no drives are fitted as standard. A Dell PERC H730P RAID controller manages the array and offloads parity calculations from the CPUs. Dual 750 W power supplies share the load for redundancy. An onboard 10 GbE two-port 562T adapter supplies high-speed networking, while iDRAC9 Enterprise enables full out-of-band remote management. Rail kits are available separately for rack installation.

Sustained throughput with dual-socket scaling

Under continuous load both Xeon Silver 4116 CPUs maintain their 2.1 GHz base frequency across all 24 cores, avoiding the single-core turbo behaviour seen in burst-oriented parts. The 16.5 MB last-level cache per processor reduces memory latency during long-running jobs. DDR4 ECC memory corrects single-bit errors on the fly, protecting data integrity during extended compute runs. Redundant power supplies and hot-swap drive bays allow component replacement without downtime.
