The Supermicro SYS-6029U-E1CR4T is a 2U rackmount server built around two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores each. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory and a MegaRAID 9361-8i controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Twelve hot-plug 3.5-inch drive bays accept SATA or SAS drives for high-capacity storage arrays.

Upgrade from single-socket or lower-core systems

This dual-socket platform suits workloads that outgrow single-processor servers, such as virtualization clusters, database nodes or hyper-converged storage. The jump is worth it when thread count and memory bandwidth become bottlenecks, and when the 12-bay chassis eliminates the need for external JBODs. Buyers who need more than 12 drives or who require front bezel and rack rails included should look elsewhere.

Sustained load behaviour

Dual 1000-watt titanium-efficiency power supplies provide redundant hot-swap power for continuous operation. The MegaRAID 9361-8i includes 1 GB cache with battery backup to protect writes during extended rebuilds or power events. Four 10GBase-T ports via the Intel X710 controller and a dedicated IPMI 2.0 management port maintain network and remote-access throughput under heavy I/O. GPU capability is limited to the onboard Matrox G200 with 8 MB video memory.
