The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rackmount server built for data-centre workloads that demand high local storage density. It ships with one Xeon Platinum 8160 processor running at 2.1 GHz and 24 cores, plus 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. The chassis supports up to eight 3.5-inch SATA drives and includes a PERC H730P RAID controller for hardware RAID management.

Tool-Less Drive Access and iDRAC9 Remote Management

Drive bays are front-accessible and tool-less, allowing hot-swap replacement without removing the server from the rack. The PERC H730P controller handles RAID initialisation through the BIOS utility or the iDRAC9 Enterprise interface, which also provides full out-of-band power, console and firmware control. Memory slots and the second CPU socket are reachable after removing the top cover; no special tools are required.

SATA Interface Limits Throughput to 6 Gb/s Per Drive

The eight drive bays connect via SATA, capping each device at 6 Gb/s regardless of the drive's own rating. The PERC H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, but total array bandwidth cannot exceed the combined SATA lane budget of the backplane. A second Xeon 8160 can be added later to double core count and memory channels, raising the ceiling for compute-bound tasks.
