The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2643 v3 six-core processor running at 3.4 GHz. It ships with 4 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and two 500 GB 7.2 K RPM 2.5-inch SATA enterprise drives managed by the B140i software RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10. Dual 500 W hot-swap redundant power supplies provide continuous operation. This configuration targets small business or branch-office workloads that need reliable compute density in a standard rack footprint.

Sustained operation

Under continuous load the twin 500 W redundant power supplies share the demand so that a single unit failure does not interrupt service. The B140i controller handles RAID parity calculations in software, which is adequate for light database or file-serving tasks but can become a bottleneck during heavy random-write streams. The installed 4 GB DDR4 ECC memory limits the working set size; memory-intensive applications will require additional modules to avoid excessive paging. Eight SFF drive bays allow further capacity expansion within the same chassis.

Pre-installation checks

Verify that your rack provides 2U of vertical space and supports the server’s depth and weight. Confirm that the B140i SATA-only RAID controller matches your storage plan; it does not support SAS or NVME drives. Ensure DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs are sourced for any memory upgrade, as other DDR generations will not fit. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics output is intended for basic management console access only. No operating system is included, so installation media and licences must be prepared separately.
