The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for dense compute environments. It ships with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 24-core processors running at 2.4 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency. A total of 512 GB of DDR4 2933 MHz registered ECC memory fills the 16 DIMM slots. Storage is handled by a PERC H330 controller and two 960 GB SATA SSDs in the 2.5-inch bays. The board includes a Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb network daughter card and iDRAC9 Enterprise for remote management.

Suited for virtualization and HPC clusters

This configuration targets workloads such as virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing where core density and memory capacity matter. Buyers who need GPU acceleration or more than two 2.5-inch drives should look elsewhere because the blade has only two drive bays and the integrated Matrox G200 provides only basic 2D video. The maximum memory ceiling of 2 TB and the fixed two-socket limit also constrain very large in-memory databases.

Blade installs into MX or M1000e chassis

Installation means sliding the blade into a compatible Dell PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure that supplies power, cooling and fabric interconnects. No operating system is pre-installed so the administrator must deploy one after the blade is seated. Common issues arise when the chassis firmware or iDRAC version is older than the blade requires, preventing the server from posting or joining the management network. The front bezel and ready rails are not included and must be sourced separately if needed.
