Dense 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 packs twenty-six 3.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rack height. Dual Xeon Gold 6254 processors deliver thirty-six cores at 3.1 GHz with 4.0 GHz turbo for compute-heavy datasets. 512 GB of DDR4-2933 ECC memory across sixteen slots supports large working sets. The PERC HBA330 controller presents all drives without RAID abstraction.

SATA throughput ceiling

Each of the twenty-six 4 TB drives runs at 7.2 K RPM over a 6 Gb/s SATA link. The HBA330 mini card provides a 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA pipe to the backplane, yet the drives themselves cannot exceed the SATA bus limit. Sequential workloads will saturate well before the controller headroom is reached. Random I/O remains constrained by mechanical latency and the single-ported SATA interface.

Hot-swap bays and redundant power

Twenty-six front-access carriers allow drive replacement without tools or downtime. Dual 1100 W platinum supplies share the load and maintain operation if one unit fails. The OCP 2.0 mezzanine adds dual 10/25 Gb SFP28 ports for high-speed fabric uplinks. iDRAC 9 Enterprise gives full out-of-band control over power, firmware and hardware health.
