Six-drive SATA backplane

The ICY DOCK MB996SP-6SB fits six 2.5-inch SATA SSDs or hard drives into a single 5.25-inch half-height bay. A full-metal chassis and aluminium trays protect the drives while supporting SATA 6 Gb/s transfer rates. A rear 40 mm fan with High, Low and Off settings provides active cooling for sustained workloads. Hot-swap capability allows drive changes without powering down the system.

RAID arrays and multi-drive servers

This unit suits builders who need high-density SATA storage in a standard optical bay for RAID configurations, media servers or industrial PCs. The tray LEDs show power and activity status for each drive at a glance. Systems that only offer 3.5-inch bays or lack SATA ports cannot accommodate this backplane. Buyers needing more than six drives must add additional bays or a different enclosure.

Six SATA ports required

The backplane connects to the host through six separate 7-pin SATA cables, so the motherboard or controller must provide six free SATA connectors. Each drive slot accepts 2.5-inch drives from 7 mm to 9.5 mm thick. If the host has fewer than six SATA ports, not all bays can be used simultaneously.
