The ASRock Z390 STEEL LEGEND is an ATX motherboard built around the Intel Z390 chipset. It accepts 8th and 9th Generation Intel Core processors in the LGA 1151 socket. The board is not backward compatible with earlier LGA 1151 CPUs. It targets builders who need a full-size platform for these specific processor generations.

DDR4 memory limits and dual-channel operation

Four 288-pin slots support dual-channel DDR4 up to 128 GB total capacity. Validated speeds range from 2133 MT/s to 4266+(OC) MT/s including 2400, 2666, 2933, 3200, 3600, 3733, 3800, 3866, 4000 and 4133 MT/s. Only non-ECC un-buffered modules are supported. The operating system may reserve memory under 32-bit Windows.

PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slot for NVMe or SATA drives

The primary Ultra M.2 socket (M2_1) accepts M-key modules in 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 lengths. It runs at PCIe 3.0 x4 (32 Gb/s) for NVMe SSDs or at SATA 6.0 Gb/s for SATA M.2 drives. Installing a SATA-type M.2 device in M2_1 disables the SATA3_5 connector. This slot determines whether a high-speed NVMe boot drive can be used.
