32GB DDR3 ECC Registered kit for Dell PowerEdge R520

This 32GB kit contains four 8GB DDR3 1333MHz ECC Registered DIMMs built for the Dell PowerEdge R520 server. Each module runs at 1.5V with CL9 timing and a 2Rx4 organisation. The registered design adds a buffer that reduces electrical load on the memory controller, which is required for the large-capacity configurations this platform supports.

Replacing unbuffered ECC

The R520 accepts either Registered ECC or Unbuffered ECC memory, but the two types cannot be mixed in the same system. If the server currently uses Unbuffered ECC DIMMs, every slot must be repopulated with Registered modules like these to enable the full 384GB Registered ceiling. The upgrade is worth it when the workload needs more than the 48GB Unbuffered limit or when all twelve sockets must be filled.

Straightforward installation with one critical rule

Installation follows standard 240-pin DIMM procedure: power down, open the chassis, align the notch and press until the latches click. The only common error is mixing Registered and Unbuffered ECC within the same memory bank, which the firmware will reject. Use identical 2Rx4 modules in each bank and populate sockets per the R520’s six-sockets-per-processor layout for correct operation.
