The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rackmount server built for business, data centre, virtualization and cloud deployments. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 2.1GHz 16-core processors reaching 3.7GHz turbo and 16GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory. The PERC H730P controller with 2GB cache supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for flexible storage arrays.

Installation notes and common issues

The server arrives with eight 2.5-inch drive bay fillers installed; each filler must be removed before inserting a SAS or SATA drive. Two 550W platinum power supplies slide into the rear and lock with a lever, providing redundancy if both are populated. iDRAC 9 Express is configured through the front LCD panel or a dedicated network port; a missing DHCP reservation is the most frequent cause of remote access failure.

Practical limits of the SAS/SATA interface

The H730P connects drives over 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA links, so SATA SSD throughput caps at the SATA link speed rather than the controller maximum. RAID 5 and 6 rebuild times grow with drive capacity, and the 2GB cache helps absorb write bursts but cannot eliminate the parity penalty. Eight 2.5-inch bays set the physical device limit; larger drive counts require external enclosures.
