The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rack server built for dense environments running virtualization, cloud, or database workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors at 2.2 GHz with a 3.0 GHz turbo, each providing ten cores. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory and eight 1.8 TB 10K SAS drives on a PERC H730P controller complete the base configuration. Dual 550 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Express remote management are included.

Storage speed limited by 12 Gb/s SAS interface

The PERC H730P controller operates at 12 Gb/s over SAS and SATA links, which caps the maximum throughput of the eight installed 1.8 TB drives. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 are supported along with pass-through mode, but the 12 Gb/s bus remains the ceiling for aggregate array performance. The 10K rotational speed of the drives also bounds random I/O latency compared with solid-state media. Integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet provides network connectivity without consuming a PCIe slot.

Verify rack depth and memory expansion needs

The 1U form factor requires a rack with sufficient depth for the chassis and cable management; front bezel and ready rails are not included. Only 16 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory is installed across two slots, so larger virtualization hosts will need additional DIMMs that match the registered ECC specification. PCIe expansion is available for extra network or storage controllers, but the 1U height restricts cards to low-profile form factors. Ensure the operating environment can supply redundant power to both 550 W units.
