Server Purpose

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for virtualization, database management and software-defined storage workloads. Dual Xeon Silver 4114 processors provide twenty cores at 2.2GHz with 3.0GHz turbo for multi-threaded performance. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC memory supports reliable operation across business-critical applications. The twelve 3.5-inch bays deliver high-capacity local storage in a compact form factor.

Storage Upgrade Path

This configuration includes twelve 4TB 7.2K SATA drives managed by a PERC H730P controller with 2GB cache. The controller enables RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode for flexible data protection. Buyers who want more storage density than twelve 3.5-inch drives provide will need a different chassis or external enclosure. The H730P battery-backed cache protects write operations during unexpected power loss.

Build Integration

Dual 750-watt platinum power supplies deliver redundant power for continuous uptime. Integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet handles baseline network connectivity without add-in cards. iDRAC 9 Express provides out-of-band remote management for monitoring and administration. PCIe slots remain available for additional networking, storage controllers or acceleration hardware. Front bezel and ready rails are not included and must be sourced separately for rack installation.
