Compact 1U rack server for virtualised workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R630 fits a dual-socket Intel Xeon E5-2637 v3 configuration with 48 GB of DDR4 memory into a single rack unit. Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug drive bays and a PERC H330 RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60 give flexible local storage for databases or virtual machines. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies keep the platform running through a single supply failure.

Thermals and power in steady operation

Two 750 W redundant supplies share the load, so each unit runs well below its rated capacity during normal use. The 1U chassis uses high-speed fans that ramp based on inlet temperature, keeping both Xeon processors at safe thermal margins while idling or serving light traffic. Acoustic output is typical for a dense rack server and assumes installation in a dedicated server room rather than an office environment.

Behaviour under sustained load

When all sixteen threads are fully utilised the memory subsystem operates at up to 2400 MT/s, limited by the installed processor capability. The H330 controller maintains consistent throughput across the two 1 TB 7.2 K SATA drives in RAID 1 or across larger arrays up to the 14 TB per drive maximum. Three PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot remain available for additional networking or acceleration cards without exceeding the platform power budget.
