Dense Scale-Out Platform

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores and a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. Eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730P controller provide the storage foundation.

Build Integration Requirements

The 1U chassis occupies a single rack unit and includes ready rails and a front bezel for standard cabinet mounting. Two hot-swap 750 W platinum power supplies deliver redundant power without consuming extra rack space. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for flexible network connectivity. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote management independent of the host operating system.

Sustained Load Behaviour

Redundant power supplies and hot-swap drive bays allow component replacement without service interruption during continuous operation. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with a 2 GB cache backed by battery to protect in-flight data. Registered ECC memory corrects single-bit errors on the fly to maintain data integrity under heavy workloads. The platform supports up to 3 TB of DDR4 across 24 slots for future capacity expansion.
