The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack-mount server system supplied new with a single Intel Xeon Silver 4216 processor running at 2.1 GHz and 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. It includes a PERC H740P RAID controller and an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for remote management. The chassis provides four 3.5-inch drive bays using a SATA interface, and no drives are installed.

Suited to single-socket workloads needing room

This configuration fits environments that run virtualisation, databases or file services on one CPU but want the option to add a second Xeon processor later. The 128 GB of installed DDR4 can be scaled toward the 7.68 TB maximum across the available memory slots. Buyers who require dual-processor performance from day one or more than four drive bays should look at a different platform.

The chassis supports exactly four large-form-factor drives on a SATA backplane managed by the PERC H740P controller. This bay count and interface decide whether the server can hold the required number of spinning disks or SSDs. If the deployment needs additional bays or a different drive interface, another chassis is required.
