The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack-mounted server built for organisations that need dense compute in a standard cabinet. It ships with one Intel Xeon 5118 processor running at 2.3GHz and 64GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. The chassis supports up to four 3.5-inch SATA drives and a second processor for future expansion.

Tool-less rails and iDRAC9 remote access

Installation uses tool-less sliding rails that fit common square-hole racks; the rail kit is available on request. The PERC H740P RAID controller is pre-installed, so drive cables connect directly to the backplane without extra adapters. A common oversight is forgetting to order the rail kit or drives separately, since the unit arrives without storage and rails are not included by default.

Dual 750W supplies and sustained workloads

Two 750W power supplies provide redundancy for continuous operation. The Xeon 5118 delivers 12 cores with a 16.5MB cache, suited for virtualisation, database and file-serving tasks that run for hours. The 10GbE 2-port 562T adapter maintains throughput under load, while iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote monitoring and firmware updates without physical access.
