Target workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built for dense virtualisation and database workloads. Dual Intel Xeon E5-2609v3 six-core processors at 1.9GHz provide twelve threads for multi-tenant environments. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 memory and two 300GB 15K SAS drives on a PERC H730 RAID controller deliver low-latency storage for critical applications.

Upgrade path

The system replaces older 1U or tower servers that lack hot-plug drive bays and redundant 750W power supplies. Moving from a single-socket platform doubles thread count and adds twenty-four DIMM slots for future memory growth up to 1536GB. The jump is worthwhile when workloads exceed the memory or drive-count limits of entry-level hardware and require RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60 flexibility.

Build integration

Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives without downtime. Seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot support additional network or storage adapters. Dual redundant power supplies and iDRAC8 remote management simplify rack deployment. The Matrox G200eR2 video and DVD-ROM handle local console and media tasks. Networking starts at four 1GbE ports with optional 10GbE daughter cards.
